 Biology is defined as “the study of the living world”.  One of the most important base concepts of biology is deciding what is living, and what is.

Characteristics of Life

Mini Glossary Cell: smallest unit of life Homeostasis: an organism's ability to maintain steady internal conditions when outside conditions change Multicellular: a living thing that is made of two or more cells Organisms: a thing that has all the characteristics of life Unicellular:  a living thing made of only one cell

How do living things differ from nonliving things?

Unicellular Organisms Whether an organism is made of one cell or many cells, all living things have structures that have specific functions. Unicellular Organisms Multicellular Organisms

Characteristic  Definition Example Organization  Living things are made of units called cells. Cells have small structures that allow them to function. Cells work together to form larger structures of the body.  Growth and Development Over time, living things gain more cells. In some organisms cells become specialized to do certain functions.  Reproduction  Living things give rise to more of the same type of living thing.  Response to Stimuli Living things have responsiveness to their internal and external environments.

Characteristics  Definition  Example Homeostasis Living things maintain stable and balanced internal conditions.  Use of Energy Living things need to eat or absorb food. Food provides the body fuel to undergo life processes.
