Ch. 15, Lesson 2 History and Government Some of the older human civilizations began in the Nile River valley. Farmers in that area were among the first to domesticate plants and animals.

Egyptians built a sophisticated irrigation system to water crops during droughts. They also developed a calendar with a 365 day year and a system of writing known as hieroglyphics.

Invasions by Arab armies brought the Muslim religion to N. Africa. Algeria was invaded by France.

Italy colonized Libya. Disagreements led to European powers drawing geometric boundaries in N. Africa.

Egypt gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1922. Algeria won independence from France in 1962.

Libya won independence from Italy in 1951. Tunisia separated from France in 1956.
