Working into Sustainable Employment – LIKEWiSE Working into Sustainable Employment – A training and volunteering programme which leads to traineeships within the Social Care Sector. Helping Hands A Nottinghamshire wide outreach employment programme for people with Mental Health issues that require intensive, tailored support in order to secure and sustain employment.

Befriending and Mentoring Employment Brokerage A Nottingham City service for people living in temporary accommodation – arguably the people with the most extensive barriers – into training and employment. The service has exceeded its targets by 50%. Befriending and Mentoring An accredited service that offers people the opportunity to be trained as mentors. The service currently has approximately 60 befrienders and mentors and delivers a service to in excess of 120 people.

Our social enterprises are WORKSHOP TRAINING CENTRE, regional winner of National Training awards 2010. Base for enterprises and provides courses in numeracy literacy IT, woodwork, painting an decorating.

An IT suite and advice and guidance sessions.

FIXIT complete estate management service, delivering all aspects of premise management for private and professional customers.

BIKE CLUB, recycling unwanted bikes from individuals and organisations for hire and re sale.

WOODPECKERS, re claiming waste wood and creating items for sale

How does it work, methodology Paint It employed Community Payback Coordinator, who leads a second team (trainee himself with a history of offending behaviour and substance misuse,). Made up of referrals by Nottinghamshire Probation Trust Community Payback team adopts a Community Payback brand specifically identifying its work to the general public, by means of an A board and identity card.

Up to seven offenders work 5 days per week over 46 weeks therefore producing 1610 days of Community Payback. Community Payback offenders will have the opportunity to be deployed within the core Paint It team when there hours are spent. Probation induct offenders and assess suitability for the paint it scheme. Risk assessments will be undertaken, so far the offenders referred have been suitable with 1 being returned.

We are given the hours, manage the delivery of these and report daily on FTA’s as well as recording on their cards and our databases. Offenders would be referred by the Community Payback team and would be assessed for their ability for the programme by the Paint It Community Payback Coordinator and the painting and decorating instructor, within our mock bays.

Training need is assessed and a relevant program developed form our established learning materials and a portfolio developed. Once accepted onto the programme offenders would be trained to the minimum acceptable level to go on site. Sites will have already been identified, costed and the logistics and numbers needed on site will have been communicated to the Coordinator and the probation service.

The range of tasks involved in decorating does not exclude those with lower abilities, as craft tasks can be completed by individuals with higher skills levels. Offenders will be expected to make their own way to site unless the site is located in rural Nottinghamshire where transport is arranged. Running single sites per team. It also enables close comprehensive supervision and monitoring.

Richter utilised again at the end of hours to give us a distance travelled tool. Sites are assessed in terms of man hours and labour allotted accordingly. “Prestige sites” are finished and snagged by the original Paint it volunteers which does include high level probation clients. This enables a swift completion and keeps offenders busy with the larger tasks involved at initial stages.

Offenders only work on projects for 3rd sector organisations, removing the “for profit” issue. We are able to signpost offenders to specialist support if required. Using paint and other finishing materials with low volatile compounds, such as water based gloss. We do not use meths or white spirits to clean resources instead using a system of keeping brushes and rollers wet, avoiding using water in the cleaning process also.

We offer a service to local businesses where we will use their waste paint products at our training centre reducing disposal costs and waste. Encourage service users to take environmental factors into account when developing life skills, such as using public transport or getting a bike from frameworks bike recycling scheme.

Success is measured by: 369 offenders on Community Payback taken on 1942 Community Pay back hours completed   Training 16 enrolled on scaffolding training 7 enrolled on a health and safety certificate  7 enrolled on  CSCS cards 4  completing NVQ Level 2
