Personality Intro to Wellness

What is personality? The particular combination of emotional, attitudinal, and behavioral response patterns of an individual. Refers to dispositions in the person that help to determine his behavior and that differ from one person to another.

Why is it important to know about your personality? It can help you academically It can help identify your strengths & weaknesses It can help you develop better relationships by becoming more understanding and accepting of people who are different from you It can help choose a major and a career choice

Measuring Personality Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Jung Typology The Big Five Personality Traits

Carl Jung Typology Jung concluded that differences in behavior result from people’s inborn tendencies to use their minds in different ways. As people act on these tendencies, the develop patterns of behavior.

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Created during World War II to help women entering the workforce for the first time. A questionnaire designed to measure psychological preferences in how people perceive the world and make decisions.

Preferences The MBTI & Jung’s Typology report preferences on four dichotomies, each consisting of two opposite poles. What is a preference? Sign your name as you normally do. Sign your name with your opposite hand.

Four Dichotomies Where do you prefer to focus your attention? Where do you get your energy? How do you prefer to take in information? How do you make decisions? How do you prefer to get things decided?

Indicators Extroverted (E) External World (I) Introverted Internal World Sensing (S) Details (N) Intuition Big Picture Thinking (T) Logic (F) Feeling Emotion Judging (J) Organized (P) Perceiving Improvise

The Big Five Personality Traits Unlike MBTI, the Big 5 is not based on anyone’s theory of behavior Began in 1936, 18,000 words from the English dictionary were identified that could be used to distinguish a person’s behavior Over time and many different studies, it was narrowed down to FIVE

The Big Five Personality Traits Extroversion – Level of sociability & enthusiasm Conscientiousness – Level of organization & work ethic Agreeableness- Level of friendliness & kindness Neuroticism- Level of calmness & tranquility Openness – Level of creativity & curiosity
