The transfer playbook: Essential practices for two- and four-year institutions. New York, NY: Community College Research Center, Teachers College, Columbia University and The Aspen Institute College Excellence Program.
Literature Data: 80% of students attending community colleges declare transfer as a primary goal. Jenkins and Fink (2016) note that only 14% of the 720,000 degree-seeking students attending community colleges in fall 2007 transferred and completed a bachelor’s degree within 6 years. According to Orians (2017), for the fall 2010 student cohort, after six years, Michigan community colleges had an overall transfer-out rate (with an AD) of 35.3% and a 36.6% completion rate. These numbers have prompted state legislatures to begin passing mandates and funding mechanisms related to completion and/or graduation outcomes (National Conferences of State Legislators, 2015).
Literature Based on research and surveys, Orians (2017) recommends: Simplifying the transfer process Working with the institution’s best transfer partners Establishing standards for transfer partnerships Building pathways that include the associate degree Aligning associate degree requirements with bachelor’s degree requirements.
