BORN: APRIL 21, 1926 (AGE 87) BECAME QUEEN: FEBRUARY 6, 1952 CROWNED: JUNE 2, 1953 DIAMOND JUBILEE: JUNE 2012 (60 YEARS ON THE THROWN) In 1936, the course of Elizabeth's life changed with the death of her grandfather, King George V. Her uncle became King Edward VIII, but he only ruled for six months. King Edward chose to marry an American and give up the thrown. As a result, Elizabeth's father, Prince Albert, became King George VI.
