Philippi Conversions and Persecution

Philippi Conversions and Persecution Jailer and his household, 16:25-34 Faith in the darkness, 16:25 Miraculous release; merciful rescue, 16:26-28 “What must I do to be saved?” 16:29-34 Nature of saving faith Immediately obey the gospel to be saved The joy of salvation Public correction of public wrong, 16:35-40 Acts 16:30-31 – “30 and brought them out and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? 31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus, and thou shalt be saved, thou and thy house.” Perhaps he was thinking similarly to the situation with Paul on the voyage to Rome – Acts 27:20, 31 – “20 And when neither sun nor stars shone upon (us) for many days, and no small tempest lay on (us,) all hope that we should be saved was now taken away … 31 Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved.” “to be saved” – cf. I Timothy 2:3-4 – “3 This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; 4 who would have all men to be saved, and come to the knowledge of the truth.” “what must we do” – cf. Luke 3:10-14 – “10 And the multitudes asked him, saying, What then must we do? 11 And he answered and said unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath food, let him do likewise. 12 And there came also publicans to be baptized, and they said unto him, Teacher, what must we do? 13 And he said unto them, Extort no more than that which is appointed you. 14 And soldiers also asked him, saying, And we, what must we do? And he said unto them, Extort from no man by violence, neither accuse (any one) wrongfully; and be content with your wages.” cf. John 6:28-29 – “28 They said therefore unto him, What must we do, that we may work the works of God? 29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.” “what shall we do” – Acts 2:37-38 – “37 Now when they heard (this,) they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and the rest of the apostles, Brethren, what shall we do? 38 And Peter (said) unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” “saved” – John 3:17 – “For God sent not the Son into the world to judge the world; but that the world should be saved through him.” Luke 19:10 – “For the Son of man came to seek and save that which was lost.” Acts 2:21 – “And it shall be, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (from Joel 2:32) I Corinthians 15:1-2 – “15 Now I make known unto you brethren, the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye received, wherein also ye stand, 2 by which also ye are saved, if ye hold fast the word which I preached unto you, except ye believed in vain.” [same word in Greek] cf. “whole” or “made whole”: Mark 5:23, 28, 34 – “22 And there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and seeing him, he falleth at his feet, 23 and beseecheth him much, saying, My little daughter is at the point of death: (I pray thee), that thou come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be made whole, and live … 28 For she said, If I touch but his garments, I shall be made whole … And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.” Nature of saving faith. James 2:14, 19 – “What doth it profit, my brethren, if a man say he hath faith, but have not works? can that faith save him? … 19 Thou believest that God is one; thou doest well: the demons also believe, and shudder.” Immediately obey … See verse 15 with Lydia. Verse 33, “the same hour of the night … immediately” Acts 8:36 – “And as they went on the way, they came unto a certain water; and the eunuch saith, Behold, (here is) water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?” Acts 9:18 – “And straightway there fell from his eyes as it were scales, and he received his sight; and he arose and was baptized” ; Acts 22:16 – “And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on his name.” The joy of salvation (verse 34). Acts 8:39 – “And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip; and the eunuch saw him no more, for he went on his way rejoicing.” Romans 5:2 – “through whom also we have had our access by faith into this grace wherein we stand; and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” I Corinthians 13:6 – “rejoiceth not in unrighteousness, but rejoiceth with the truth” Philippians 4:4 – “Rejoice in the Lord always: again I will say, Rejoice.” I Peter 1:8 – “whom not having seen ye love; on whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice greatly with joy unspeakable and full of glory” Luke stayed in Philippi, 16:40; 17:1
