Safety! Tami Kirkland July 20-21, 2017

Why Safety? Safety procedures help to: Keep ALL participants safe Keep the tools and equipment from being damaged Keep the robot parts from being damaged

Potential Safety Concerns Tools – power tools and hand tools Machines Electricity Soldering

Keep the Students Safe Make sure all participants know general shop safety procedures Have them pass a safety quiz before operating any equipment? Safety Contract? Notebook and this link has a sample quiz for you to review / use

Safe Behaviors Be sure they know safe behavior in a shop or the pit Wear safety goggles Leave a safe distance between working student and others watching, etc. Don’t distract someone working with a tool or a piece of equipment

Equipment Usage Know the safe way to use the equipment Make sure they know how to operate a tool or piece of equipment before they turn it on Have them plan what they are going to do and how they are going to do it before they start Don’t rush… take their time

Don’t Forget… Safety is a required topic in the Engineering Notebook Document what your team does to ensure safety Practice safety habits consistently Pictures should show students with safety glasses when working on robot We’ll monitor safety at our events
