The Tuscarora War

The Tuscarora War By 1711, English settlements were outgrowing the Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds. The Tuscarora were determined to keep their land so they burned all villages on the Pamlico Sound, killing hundreds of colonists. The Tuscarora claimed it was payback for years of mistreatment by the English.

The Tuscarora War Governor Hyde asked Virginia for help, they agree to send troops if NC gave all land north of the Albemarle to VA. South Carolina promised an army, but when they arrived it was mostly other Native Americans who hated the Tuscarora. Fighting continued for 2 years, during this time an outbreak of Yellow Fever hit Carolina killing many colonists living in NC.

The Tuscarora War By 1713, James Moore of SC arrived with his army and defeated the Tuscarora. The natives he didn’t kill, his men captured and sold off to slave traders. Now that both Carolinas are free from Native attacks they began to exam their laws and view points on Anglican rule. (religion)

The Tuscarora War The result of this war was: The Tuscarora Nation was forever removed from NC. Facing total death, they were forced to move back to NY to merge with other Iroquois Nations. The threat of Native attacks were over in NC and rapid expansion begins especially in the present day Wilmington area.
