EC Transcript Review: Check your transcript and graduation status frequently online through Q Are you registered for the correct classes you need for graduation or for college admissions? Determine your college eligibility Subtract credits for repeated courses Check for errors and make sure your address and phone number are correct

College Entrance Exams SAT/ACT Exams must be completed by December of senior year for consideration at most colleges SAT: November 3 test, deadline October 5; December 1 test, deadline November 2 ACT: October 27, deadline September 28; December 8, deadline November 2 Check each college website for their deadlines since they can vary You must release your scores to the colleges where you are applying CalPoly doesn’t guarantee application review if the test scores aren’t in by November

Researching Colleges on Naviance Go to EC Website, student tab, use Q log in & password Find college matches Investigate matched colleges that align with career aspirations and interests Learn about the college decision process Request info, enrollment, and city size, take online tours, look at majors, student activities, and financial aid Determine your post-secondary plan of action

Career Planning and College Major Explore your career interests and aptitudes in Naviance Take a Career Interest Survey and Personality Assessment Research careers and college majors based on what you know about yourself Then find out what education / training is required Enroll or apply to a school / college program that offers you a major in your career field of interest

COLLEGE Applications Visit each college website and make a master list of schools and deadlines CSU Application filing period is October 1 through November 30, 2018 UC Application filing period November 1 through November 30, 2018 Students can begin working on their UC application now, but cannot file until 11/1/18

Explore the 23 California State Campuses on Cal State Apply: calstate.edu/apply Apply and Submit between October 1- November 30: NO LETTER OF REC OR ESSAY Input your high school courses or explore the transfer options: Make an account NOW to help you in the process.

Start Application to one of 9 UC Campuses NOW: You can hit submit between November 1-30. ESSAY REQUIRED (Personal Insight Questions) Eight questions to choose from & you must respond to four. Responses limited to a max of 350 words. NO LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION

Private / Independent and Out-of-State College Applications Most private / independent colleges use the online Common Application at www.commonapp.org Many require a personal essay / statement For the Common App: Choose from seven prompts & write a 650 word essay. Some colleges may also require supplemental questions. You must check deadlines and requirements online Letters of recommendation from your teachers, mentors, coaches and school counselor are usually required

Letter of Recommendation Requests Ask politely – Your teachers, coaches, employer, mentor and school counselor. Often they will want a resume or Letter of Recommendation Worksheet (located on the EC website, under the counseling tab) completed first to help them write the letter. Most applications are completed online. You will need your recommenders e-mail address, and must invite them through the online application to complete the letter of recommendation Give them time -- Three to four weeks in advance is an appropriate amount of time Thank them -- It is very important for them to know that you appreciate the work they have done for you .

Create an account for Common Application (Common App) Create an account for Common Application (Common App). Deadlines vary widely for the over 600 universities. ESSAYS REQUIRED YOU MUST SEE YOUR COUNSELOR 3-4 WEEKS PRIOR TO LETTER OF REC DEADLINE. Yes, Common App requires a letter of rec from counselors and teachers.It is called a School Report.

Understanding College App Deadlines Regular Decision: No restrictions, can apply to multiple campuses by stated deadlines UC/CSU Campuses Rolling Admissions: Campuses review apps on an on-going basis Early Decision: Binding commitment, can apply to only one campus, must go to that campus if admitted Early Action: Apply early, find out early, make final decision on campus choice by May 1 Restrictive: Limits on applying to other schools Non-Restrictive: No limits on applying to other schools

California Community Colleges Apply February-March 2019 for priority admission Some require assessment tests in math & English & some use a comprehensive assessment. To transfer from a program to a CSU/UC, visit www.assist.org Associate Degrees and Certificate programs

Apply to one of the CCC (California Community Colleges) through Los Rios: American River Consumnes River Sac City Folsom Lake (Sierra College is through a different website) No Essays, No Rec Letters, A-G’s not required but recommended, must have High School diploma OR be 18 years old Los Rios Applications Open in Early February (Sierra can even apply now). There are 5 steps to Matriculation: Apply Online Orientation Assessment Tests in Math and English Los Rios, Comprehensive assessment Sierra Meet with a counselor to make an Educational Plan Pay and Sign up for Classes

College Representatives at EC College Reps: Many college reps visit EC throughout the fall. These are announced in the E-gram, school bulletin, Facebook (El Camino Fundamental High School PTSA) & Instagram (ECHS Connect). Writing the Personal Statement Workshop: Private College Planning Counselor will give you tips to write the UC Personal Insight Questions and Personal Statement for the Common App and other colleges/universities October 16, 2018 during 4th period. Students must pre-sign up in the Counseling Office to attend these visitations.

Financial Aid Students/parents can begin filing the FAFSA October 1, 2018 - March 2, 2019. www.fafsa.gov Parents must use 2017 tax information Parents will be able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to automatically import tax information Community Colleges offer California College Promise Grant, formerly the Board of Governors (BOG) tuition waiver program Dream Act: Students who are undocumented should use this application instead of the FAFSA https://dream.csac.ca.gov/ Scholarship information available under the college tab on Naviance Some private and out-of-state colleges require the CSS/Profile in addition to the FAFSA, which can be found on the College Board website As you fill out your FAFSA you can refer to help text for every question, and during certain times of the day chat online with a customer service rep

Financial Aid Workshops All SJUSD students and parents can get step by step help with their financial aid applications by attending a Cash for College Workshop Encina High School, October 3,6:00 p.m. San Juan High School, October 4, 6:00 p.m. Del Campo High School, November 1, 6:00 p.m. Other workshops in the Sacramento area can be found at www.csac.ca.gov

College Athletics Students must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center online to be recruited for Division 1 and some Division 2 colleges www.eligibilitycenter.org NCAA requirements are slightly different than A-G requirements!
