Identify and recognize five common manager personality types Agenda and Goals Identify and recognize five common manager personality types Analysis and understanding of how to work well and efficiently with each of five manager personality types 3

Five Common Manager Personality Types Suggestions Clarify directions, keep meticulous notes and understand that quarter’s objectives and the projects you’re assigned Establish your credibility - Maintain a good work ethic and put forth honesty and integrity to build a strong reputation among other staff members Don’t be intimidated to give ideas and feedback on processes, but do so politely #1 - Neanderthal Delivers direction in the form of orders and grunts “do this” or “do this now” Not focused on leading by influence, but more so by enforcing authority Demanding, discouraging 4

Five Common Manager Personality Types #2 – The Mum Suggestions Give regular prompts or pings for communication Ask for directions, updates and feedback - May find that you are training your boss, who may have been quite competent as a shy individual contributor, and that’s okay - employees that help their bosses look good, without making them feel inadequate, will usually find their boss’s gratitude in exchange. #2 – The Mum Not very communicative employees are not like mushrooms — they don’t do well in the dark Shy Distant 5

Five Common Manager Personality Types #3 – Pace-Setting Boss Creates a competitive environment at work Think Donald Trump in The Apprentice Sets very high goals and standards Demanding of employees Suggestions Ask for details What do the steps look like, whom they've seen that have done it well to get a picture of what success looks like Acknowledge how much you appreciate those clear goals to encourage more structured procedures and policies – helps eliminate subjective work environment 6

#4 – Narcissist Five Common Manager Personality Types Self entitled Puts self on pedestal and is highly critical of others Does not welcome feedback and has little empathy Suggestions Anticipate problems before they occur or become more stressful Communicate frequently, honestly and regularly so you understand what’s happening behind all of the blustering Use the CALM method -Communicate, anticipate, laugh, manage up Be a role model for good behavior and levity can help when tensions are high 7

Five Common Manager Personality Types #5 – Everyman Boss Likable but sometimes inappropriate Michael Scott from The Office Manages from the gut and is too wishy washy to lead effectively Indecisive Suggestions Train him/her into realizing that making decisions are not scary Indecisiveness can stem from the fear of making a mistake, so try to find ways to help your boss shine Email with specific deadline requests and give suggested solutions to an issue Take on leadership roles 8
