“Lead us not into Temptation“ 1. The Nature of Temptation peirasmos’ (21x) Prove, Tempt, Try: A. 20x it’s translated Temptation. 1) It’s Satan’s nature to deceive us to sin. (He’s called “The tempter” Mt 4:3; 1 Thes. 3:5) 2) Satan “tempts” in order to Corrupt us!

1. The Nature of Temptation. B. 1x it’s translated “Try” (test, prove) 1 Peter 4:12 “Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:“ 1) It’s God’s nature to help develop us.

though it be tried with fire, 2) God “tests” in order to Cleanse us! 1 Peter 1:7 “That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:”

God “tests” in order to Cleanse us! a) Gen. 22:1,2 “God did tempt Abraham, … Take thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.” Vs 8 “God will provide himself a lamb”

for now I know that thou fearest God, Gen 22:12 “Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me. Heb 11:19 “Accounting that God was able to raise him, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.”

God “tests” in order to Cleanse us! b) Job 23:10 “He knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, (bāḥan: tested) I shall come forth as gold.” Job 13:15 “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: ‎יָהַל (Yāḥal’) Verb: to Wait in hope

God “tests” in order to Cleanse us! This is why James 1:2-4 encourages us to “count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”

“Lead us not into Temptation” 2. The Promise of Temptation Jms 1:12 “Blessed (supremely fortunate) is the man that endureth (remains under) temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.”

2. The Promise of Temptation Jms 1:12 “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: A. If we endure (remain) in Satan’s temptation, we’ll usually fail. (2 Tim. 2:22) B. If we “flee” God’s tests, we’ll often “lack” something we’ll need in the future. “let patience (hopomone’) have her perfect work That ye may be perfect and entire, lacking nothing.” James 1:4

Is 5:20 “Woe unto them that call evil good, That’s why we need wisdom to recognize the different source and goal of temptation. Is 5:20 “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; (Pr. 3:5,6) James 1:5 “if any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God…”

14 But every man is tempted when: 3. The Process of Temptation Jms 1:12 Jms 1:13 “Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man. 14 But every man is tempted when: A. Attraction (The Bait) “he is drawn away of his own lust” 1) Attraction implies “distraction” from something else! (God’s path)

3. The Process of Temptation Jms 1:12 14 But every man is tempted when: A. Attraction: (The Bait!) “drawn away” B. Decision: (The Bite!) “and enticed.” Delea’zō: deluded, beguiled, trapped! C. Conception: (The Baby!) Vs 15 “When lust hath conceived, (captured) it bringeth forth sin.” (offense!)

14 But every man is tempted when: 3. Process of Temptation. 14 But every man is tempted when: A. Attraction: (The Bait!) “drawn away” B. Decision: (The Bite!) “and enticed.” C. Conception: (The Baby!) Vs 15 D. Destruction: (The Bane!) vs 15b “and sin, when it is finished, (consummated) bringeth forth (apokye’o: breeds) death.”

Conclusion: Both God and Satan can “tempt/test” us. Satan “tempts” us to corrupt / distract us. God “tests” us to cleanse or develop us. We need wisdom to recognize the source and response to both! (James 1:5) God’s Word teaches us how to do this!

Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. 1 Cor 10:11-13 “these things happened unto them for ensamples…for our admonition… Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape…”

Clean up! “Wherefore lay apart all Application: James 1:21-22 Clean up! “Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, (malignity) This involves Confession: 1 Jn. 1:7-9 “If we confess…He is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us…”

the engrafted word, Fill Up! “and receive with meekness Application: James 1:21-22 Clean up! Fill Up! “and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.” This involves Sanctification! Eph. 5:18 “Be filled with the Spirit”

This involves Application! Application: James 1:21-22 3) Shape up. “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” This involves Application!

“Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Matthew 26:41
