Planning for the Reading—Strategy 1 Critical Reading Planning for the Reading—Strategy 1

Establishing a Purpose for the Reading Purpose- Driven Reading (Teacher Driven) Every reading task should began with a purpose or a prompt, that articulated either verbally or in writing. Prompts are useful! They communicate to the students our expectations for the reading, define what students should be thinking about and doing while reading and they also help students make decisions about they types of reading strategies they will need to employ.

Before creating a prompt, consider… What do you want the student to understand? What do you want the student to do while reading? What will you have your students do with what they have read? What will you have your students summarize, analyze, or evaluate? What will the writing exercise look like? Is there a model? A template? A rubric?

It is important to remember that purposefully selecting texts and crafting prompts for individual reading (and writing) tasks is the teacher’s responsibility. Students depend on our guidance and support, and we must give it to them. Let’s look at some sample prompts that I use in CTE Business.

STANDARD 1.0 – APPLY WORD PROCESSING SOFTWARE TO PRODUCE DOCUMENTS Sample Prompt 1 BOSAS Standard 1 ARIZONA CTE CAREER PREPARATION STANDARDS & MEASUREMENT CRITERIA BOSAS (BUSINESS OPERATIONS SUPPORT AND ASSISTANT SERVICES, 52.0400.0)

STANDARD 2.0 – Composing Documents for Presentations Sample Prompt 2 BOSAS Standard 2 ARIZONA CTE CAREER PREPARATION STANDARDS & MEASUREMENT CRITERIA BOSAS (BUSINESS OPERATIONS SUPPORT AND ASSISTANT SERVICES, 52.0400.0)

STANDARD 3.0 – Using Database Software to Produce Documents Sample Prompt 3 BOSAS Standard 3 ARIZONA CTE CAREER PREPARATION STANDARDS & MEASUREMENT CRITERIA BOSAS (BUSINESS OPERATIONS SUPPORT AND ASSISTANT SERVICES, 52.0400.0)

STANDARD 4.0 – Apply Spreadsheet Software to Produce Documents Sample Prompt 4 BOSAS Standard 4 ARIZONA CTE CAREER PREPARATION STANDARDS & MEASUREMENT CRITERIA BOSAS (BUSINESS OPERATIONS SUPPORT AND ASSISTANT SERVICES, 52.0400.0)

STANDARD 5.0 – Research Appropriate Software to Enter Information Sample Prompt 5 You left off here. You still need to find an article. BOSAS Standard 5 ARIZONA CTE CAREER PREPARATION STANDARDS & MEASUREMENT CRITERIA BOSAS (BUSINESS OPERATIONS SUPPORT AND ASSISTANT SERVICES, 52.0400.0)

Samples So you notice that even on a Word document the students can Mark the Text and Chart the Text. Which means the student is not only learning reading strategies, they are learning their academic skills. They number the text, circled or squared key terms and underlined relevant information that would help them learn what word processing is and why it is important.

Purpose-Driven Reading (Student-Driven) When students are given a purpose for reading, they benefit from knowing what they should be doing or thinking about while reading. In the sample prompts that I provided, I provided the student with the questions and expectations prior to the article. Unfortunately, not all reading assignments come with a clear purpose.

For instance, if I had assigned any of the prompts with the instructions: Please read the following article prior to entering class tomorrow. My instructions are clear, but they don’t include a purpose and most students don’t think to ask, What is the most important topic or concept you would like us to understand from our reading? Clarifying the reading task increases the opportunity for success.
