Rhetorical and literary devices

Sound devices Alliteration : is the repetition of consonant sound at the beginning of words that are close to one another Example: the sweet sound of singing swam in the breeze Becky’s beagle barked and bayed, becoming bothersome for Billy.

alliteration explanation In the two examples we saw the letters in the beginning were consonants in the first sentence Ex : sweet , sound , singing , swam Becky’s , beagle , barked , bayed, becoming , bothersome , Billy. All of the letters at the beginning are consonants and are close to one another

assonance It is the repetition of vowel sound in words that are close to one another Ex :I find this line difficult to complete in time. He received three emails today In assonance the most important is sound especially and most important is it to be vowel.

Assonance explanation In assonance the position of a letter in a word is not important but the sound is the important. Ex: find , line ,time. He received ,three , emails In those three examples we saw that the position of letters doesn't matter but their sound is the important

consonance Is the repetition of consonants within or at the end of words Ex: : all mammals named Sam are clammy The string was strong The consonance is the same as assonance but consonance is the repetition of consonant sound while alliteration is the repetition of vowel sound

Consonance explanation The consonance is the same as assonance but consonance is the repetition of consonant sound while alliteration is the repetition of vowel sound Ex: mammals , named , Sam , clammy string , strong In consonance the position of repeated letters could be in the middle , beginning , end and it must be consonance.

note Those devices and techniques can be used either in literature or poetry

Structural devices Rhyme : is the repetition of sounds at the end of words . Certain poetry forms have specific rhyme schemes . Ex: ”hungry and angry” “fun and run: “light and fight” “rich and fresh” In rhyme the sound is important not the letters.

meter Is the rhythmical pattern of a poem , determined by the stressed syllables Ex: Tell me | not in | mournful | numbers And the sound | of a voice | that is still This is the | forest pri | meval, the | murmuring | pine and the | hemlocks

Other major devices Simile: compares two things using like or as Ex : he is like a lion Metaphor : compares two things without using like or as He is a lion Personification: gives human qualities to a non human. Ex : the sun smiled down on us

Other major devices Hyperbole : is exaggeration used for effects Ex :I felt stronger than a superhero

the end Done by : own yousef . Group(4)
