Porosity The amount of space between grains of a substance.

Permeability The ability of a substance to allow fluids to pass through it.

Zone of Aeration The area in the ground or rock in which the pore space is filled with air.

Zone of Saturation The area in the ground in which all pore spaces are filled with water.

Water Table The upper surface of the zone of saturation.

Aquifer A layer of permeable rock that transmits water freely

Spring: A flow of water from the ground where the land surface dips below the water table.

Well A hole or pipe drilled or dug into the ground below the water table which allows water to be pumped out.
