Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at Mass The Ordinary Minister of Holy Communion is a Bishop, Priest and Deacons [Chalice] by virtue of their office - ordination!

In every celebration of the Mass, there should be a sufficient number of ministers of Holy Communion so that the Eucharist may be distributed reverently and in an orderly manner. When the size of congregation, or the incapacity of the bishop, priest, or deacon requires it, the celebrant may be assisted by other clergy, but if such Ordinary Minsters of the Holy Communion are not present, the priest many call upon extraordinary ministers to assist him, i.e. duly instituted acolytes or even other faithful who have been deputed/delegated for this purpose … in case of a necessity, the priest may also depute/delegate a suitable person for this SINGLE occasion only. [GIRM 162]

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should receive sufficient spiritual, theological, and practical preparation to fulfill their role with knowledge and reverence …

All ministers of Holy Communion should show the greatest reverence for the Most Holy Eucharist by their demeanor, their attire, and the manner in which they handle the consecrated bread and wine - the Eucharist! I have witnessed ministers and the faithful receive Holy Communion with the same respect they would give to popcorn …

Should there be any mishap … Accidents happen during the distribution of Holy Communion even when the priest, deacon and extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, and recipient are being extremely conscientious.

For example, a host may stick to your finger or two hosts are stuck together … Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should not bless people like the priest and deacon. I suggest a simple prayer of blessing. Do not make the sign of the cross on the forehead - accident waiting to happen - host sticks to your thumb because of the oil from the other person’s skin!

As a priest, I generally shudder/shake and admonish myself if the host falls. If a host falls to the ground or any particle should fall, it is to be picked up reverently by the minister. If any of the Precious Blood is spilled, the area where the spill occurred should be washed with water … Place a purificator over the spot!

Guardians of the Holy Eucharist You are sent - Go! This is not the time for chat, stopping at the drive-thru to get a cup of coffee, run into the drug store to pick up something quickly … You are on a mission! Watch out for people, especially at Christmas and Easter.

Nursing Home: The recipient does not swallow the host and ejects the host. Use a purificator or tissue to RETRIEVE the host and return it to the sacristy placing it in water. The tissues should be burned …

Be Alert! Those with babies - I generally go to the mouth with the host … Those holding toddlers - Watch out for the unexpected – the grab! Children not paying attention - Press the host into the hand - draws attention to the Eucharist!

Rightly administering Sip it. Don’t Dip it! Rightly administering the Lord’s Supper is a mark of true Church

The communicant, including the Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion is NEVER allowed to self-communicate, even by means of intinction … Colonial Oaks: The lay person leading the Liturgy of the Word Service is not allowed to self-communicate = Give Holy Communion to other ministers and then receive from another minister …

Problem with Intinction: Keeping the elements of bread and wine separate is the earliest recorded practice of the Church. EAT and DRINK Dipping is against the NATURE of the SACRAMENT
