The Venerable Bede and Alfred the Great Taivo Karu

The Venerable Bede Was born in 773 near Sunderland. The name probably derives from The Old English-bēd, or prayer. At the age of 7 he was sent to the monastery of Wearmouth. He was ordained deacon at the age of 19 and priest at 30.

The Venerable Bede In 701 Bede wrote his first works. Bede is mainly studied as a historian now. Best known work is “An Ecclesiastical History of the English People’’. It consists of five books.

The Venerable Bede He wrote over 60 books. Died on 26 May 735. He was buried at Jarrow, later transferred to Durham.

Alfred the Great Was born in 849 Youngest son of King Æthelwulf of Wessex Only English king to be given an epithet “the Great “

Alfred the Great His public life began with the accession of his third brother. In 871 he came to the throne after the death of his thir brother, Æthelred In 878 he defeated the Danes. Restored London and laid down a new city street plan. Founded the first English public schools for young men.

Alfred the Great Alfred died in 899, the cause of his death is unknown. He was buried in Winchester, but then moved to the New Minster.
