1.2 Investigating Matter Presentation 1. Chemical and Physical Changes And the Particle Model of Matter

Matter Matter: anything that has MASS and VOLUME. Mass: the amount of Matter in a substance or object. Volume: the amount of space a substance or an object occupies.

The MASS of an object does not change depending on where it is… …but the WEIGHT does.

The VOLUME of an object also varies depending on where it is.

What kinds of matter are there? Mixture Substance MATTER (can be physically separated) (can’t be physically separated) Homogenous Heterogenous elements compounds (solution) Kool Aid Shampoo Salty water Bag of candy Pizza Vegetable soup H Fe Ca H2O NaCl

Chemical Change A change in matter that occurs when substances combine or separate to form other substances. Normally, irreversible.

Physical Change - Change of State A change that occurs in the appearance of matter, but no new substance is formed. Normally, reversible. Summarize States of Matter!
