SITUATION: Acumatica set out to create an enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution for small and midsize (SMB) companies that would reduce the complexities of this mission-critical application and make it available as a cloud service. It sought to make sure that customers could choose options including deployment, payment, data storage, and data access—and to simplify the ERP experience. SOLUTION: The company decided that Windows Azure was an ideal, cost-effective solution that would offer high value to customers. The Acumatica ERP solution has been optimized using Windows Azure Cloud Services since November 2009. Acumatica uses Windows Azure SQL Database to store customer data in a structured manner with a multitenant design. Customers can manage their own customizations and schedule updates. Unstructured data—such as attachments, receipts, and documentation—is stored using more cost-effective Windows Azure Blob services. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer highlighted Acumatica as a key cloud partner in a 2010 speech.
