Geography of Greece=hard to unify city states: political unit made up of a city and its surrounding lands Many city-states, most famous: Athens & Sparta Greek city States

Sparta Society based on military Sparta isolated themselves Boys began military training at age 7 Girls expected to strengthen their bodies in order to birth strong sons Sparta isolated themselves Looked down on trade/travel Forbid citizens to travel Sparta

Athens Developed into a democracy Only male citizens could participate Women were to maintain the household Had no say in gov’t Boys went to school, girls did not Athens
