Presentation transcript:

The Republican Tax Plan: Raises Taxes on Middle Class Families in CT The nonpartisan Tax Policy Center estimates the plan would raise taxes on nearly13 million middle class households earning less than $200,000 in 2019. In 2027, 6 in 10 middle-class families will see a tax hike. Meanwhile, 83% of people making more than $900,000 will see an average tax cut of $42,410.

The Republican Tax Plan: Penalizes Connecticut Taxpayers Eliminating the state and local tax deduction (SALT) would cause families in states like Connecticut to pay more. Currently, 41% of tax filers in Connecticut use the State and Local Tax Deduction (SALT), the second highest rate in the country. Eliminating SALT would pressure state government to trim further investments in public schools and other programs.

The Republican Tax Plan: Hurts Connecticut Homeowners Gutting SALT will increase taxes on Connecticut homeowners with incomes between $50,000 - $200,000 by an average of $800. Home values could decrease by 10% 109,000 homes in Connecticut have a value greater than $550,000, which is where the House GOP bill caps the use of the mortgage interest deduction

The Republican Tax Plan: Cuts Taxes for the Very Wealthy The nonpartisan Tax Policy Center estimates nearly 80% of tax benefits will go to the top 1% The plan would: Lower the top individual tax rate Shrink the estate tax, only helping 5,200 extremely rich families Lower the pass-through rate used by the wealthy

The Republican Tax Plan: Slashes Medicare and Medicaid The GOP budget slashes Medicare by $473 billion and cuts Medicaid by $1 trillion in order to pay for tax cuts for the top 1% of earners It also guts $5 trillion from vital programs ranging from Pell Grants to transportation

The Republican Tax Plan: Blows a Huge Hole in the Deficit The bill increases the deficit by at least $1.5 trillion The GOP could follow the same playbook they followed in 2001 by using deficits to justify deep cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid
