Improving replicability in addiction research Robert West, UCL Discussant: Tom Freeman, King’s College London

Replicability Extent to which reported study findings are repeated when what is believed to be essentially the same study is repeated Psychological Science: Aim to replicate 100 studies 47% original effect sizes within 95% CIs of replication effect sizes Science (2015) Addiction Science?

How to improve replicability Clarify constructs; ‘addiction ontology’ (e.g. craving, stress, recovery) Develop models linking constructs, their definitions, and interrelations Improve measurement (database including reliability, validity) Aid reporting (e.g. online tool) Register analysis (e.g. open science framework) Extend trial registration to all major studies Conflict of interest reporting (beyond financial; code and assess impact)
