Desertification? Desert Dessert

Desertification definition Desertification is the degradation of land in any dryland.[2] It is caused by a variety of factors, such as climate change and human activities. Desertification is a significant global ecological and environmental problem.[3]

Deforestation Deforestation: clearance or clearing is the removal of a forest or stand of trees where the land is thereafter converted to a nonforest use. Examples of deforestation include conversion of forestland to farms, ranches, or urban use.

Let’s watch the video clips to complete our language frames Desertification: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9RxnuBiFbg Deforestation (for farming) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_x58Ypfzi0w

Language Frames “According to the Video clips, soil is degraded by …Chemical fertilizers, plowing (drying out), deforestation, and over-grazing           .” “Soil erosion is caused by wind and rain and no vegetation to hold the soil together        .” “I’m not sure I agree. I think that ….         is one of the best ways to preserve soil because …Agro-ecology, not plowing, using walls around gardens, planting trees         .” Answers to sentence frames

Talk with your group (using Round Robin): Solutions? What can we do to stop deforestation and desertification? How does this affect the world in a negative way? How Deforestation affects Erosion of soil http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deforestation Why is deforestation bad? Write a paragraph listing three reasons using the site above and the description on the left. Deforestation generally increases rates of soil erosion, by increasing the amount of runoff and reducing the protection of the soil from tree litter.
