Firearm Safety Introduction: Shooting is one of the safest youth sports 105 years of Olympic Shooting-0 accidents 100,000 competitive air rifle shooters nationwide Shooting is a sport of control and discipline EVERYONE must know all of the safety rules

Firearm Safety 3. Trigger 2. Action 1. Muzzle

Firearm Safety The Muzzle The muzzle is the forward end of the barrel. The point where the pellet or projectile leaves the barrel when the gun is fired. *a gun is aimed by pointing it’s muzzle at the target

Firearm Safety The Action The action is the working mechanism of the gun. Gun actions typically have a bolt or a lever that is used to open and close the action so that the gun can be loaded and unloaded.

Firearm Safety The Trigger The trigger is apart of the action or working mechanism of the gun. The trigger is a lever that projects out of the bottom of the gun. A trigger guard protects the trigger. After a gun is loaded and the action is closed, the gun is fired by pulling the trigger.

Firearm Safety Safety Steps While taking this class these three safety steps must ALWAYS be followed to keep the shooters and the coaches safe. Shooters, coaches and range officers are all required to know and follow these rules at all times.

Firearm Safety Safety Step #1 ALWAYS keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. * Whenever you are handed a gun, the first thing you should do is point the muzzle away from people. The safest direction is usually up, or down. On the range always keep the rifle pointed downrange (at the targets).

Firearm Safety Safety Step # 2 Open the action and check to see if the gun is loaded. *If the action is open on a gun, it cannot fire, either accidentally or on purpose.

Firearm Safety Safety Step # 3 ALWAYS hold or carry a gun so that all fingers are outside the trigger guard and not on the trigger itself. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire.

Firearm Safety Clear Barrel Indicators (CBIs). A CBI is a brightly colored piece of plastic cord that is inserted from the action and run through the barrel until it pokes out both ends. An inserted CBI shows two things: There is no pellet or obstruction in the action or the barrel The action is open and the gun cannot be fired or accidentally discharge

Firearm Safety Shooting Ranges Safety Barrier Target Holders All ranges have some sort of wall or a way to control who comes and goes. Target Holders This is what your targets are attached to. Includes a device for catching your pellets Firing Line 10 meters (33 ft) from the target is the line you shoot from Firing Points Your space for firing at your target Range Officer Person giving the commands Ready Area Your preparation area. Always behind the firing line.
