Key Drama Terms TRAGEDY – a play that follows tragic conventions ASIDE – comments made in the presence of other characters which they are not meant to hear SOLILOQUY – when a character is alone on stage and reveals their inner thoughts DIALOGUE – conversation between 2 or more characters DRAMATIC IRONY – when the audience knows something about the character or plot that a character on stage is unaware of STICHOMYTHIA – short, fast paced, alternate lines of dialogue BLANK VERSE – iambic pentameters (10 syllables to a line) with no rhyme – used by higher status characters PROSE – normal speech with no pattern of rhythm or rhyme, spoken by or to lower status characters or when the playwright wants to deliberately create an impact
The Main Elements of Tragedy PLOT – a cause & effect chain of action: Incentive – Climax – Resolution TRAGIC HERO – a high status character who is neither thoroughly good nor thoroughly evil. HAMARTIA -TRAGIC FLAW – the flaw in the character which is the driving force of the downfall CATHARSIS – arousing the emotions of pity or fear in the audience & a feeling of negative emotions being ‘cleansed’ at the end of the play
