Expert Systems

Purpose An expert system is designed to help the user solve problems in a specific area such as medicine, banking, oil exploration, etc, etc. It does this by storing and using the knowledge of a specialist in that field.

Example A doctor in a remote hospital can use the knowledge of a specialist to help her diagnose what is wrong with a patient.

Advantages There is no need to seek the advice of an expert which could be very expensive and take a considerable time. The patient is dealt with much more quickly which could prevent the illness becoming much more serious. The expert system can also suggest a suitable treatment.

Example An petrochemical company can use an expert system to help its management decide where to search for oil.

Advantages By increasing the chances of finding oil through using an expert system, the company will save money in exploration costs. The expert system, by helping to discover new oil fields will help the economy of the country.

Example A mechanic can connect a car to a computer during a service to help find faults.

Advantages - Summary Expert systems can save having to call in a specialist. This will reduce costs and waiting times. Expert systems can help suggest treatments or actions to be taken. Some expert systems can help the user further by explaining how they arrive at their conclusions. Expert systems HELP humans to make important decisions.
