NASA@ Odyssey of the Mind World Finals Iowa State University, May 24-26 2018 837 student teams (7 per team) from 33 U.S. states and 13 countries competed at the world finals of this creative problem solving extravaganza. NASA scientists and educators worked with >4,000 K-12 students, coaches, and parents in 36 classroom sessions, 7 science talks, and at the Creativity Festival. Students learned how to be citizen scientists using NASA’s GLOBE Observer app to provide ground observations of clouds and mosquito larvae habitats that complement NASA space observations, and learn about NASA science and missions. Follow-up activities: June 1 webinar on NASA Earth science by Dr. Trena Ferrell, GSFC, with 35 students from St. Michael the Archangel middle school, PA. OoTM students and coaches also have access to information from 2018 world finals about NASA speakers and resources, and will be able to see selected video presentations at bit.ly/NASAOoTM2018. Selfies with students at NASA classrooms: Trena Ferrell (left); Mike Taylor (below left) Brian Campbell (below right) and Cassie Soeffing (bottom) This activity is part of the NASA Earth Science Education Collaborative (NESEC) Science Activation award, which is providing authentic STEM experiences for U.S. youth, and connecting them to NASA Earth science and subject matter experts. NESEC Team Participants: Cassie Soeffing, Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES); Trena Ferrell, GSFC; Theresa Schwerin, IGES; Brian Campbell, GSFC/GST; Mike Taylor, GSFC/SSAI; videoconference presentations by Erika Podest, NASA JPL; Marile Colon Robles, NASA LaRC, and Peder Nelson, Oregon State University Cassie_soeffing@strategies.org and trena.m.ferrell@nasa.gov
