Friday Warm-Up Using the pictures below, make your own definition for what you think globalization is

So finally what is globalization? Globalization is the connection of different parts of the world. Globalization results in the expansion of international cultural, economic, and political activities. As people, ideas, knowledge, and goods move more easily around the globe, the experiences of people around the world become more similar.

Globalization Foldable Today we are going to be making a foldable for our globalization unit. This foldable will be collected at the end of next week and count as a formal grade. Fold 3 sheets of paper like the image: Label in this order: Culture Technology Health/Environment Economy What is Globalization?

Globalization Foldable What is Globalization? Definition: Historical Examples: Visual:

What is Globalization? Globalization – the increasing interconnectedness of all parts of the world in all areas, especially communication, commerce, culture, and politics Examples: Many of the clothes you wear were made in Asia. You can eat a Big Mac in Moscow, Russia. You can watch American films in Rome. A German company can manufacture goods in Argentina and sell them in the U.S.

History of Globalization For thousands of years people have been traveling long distances to trade goods.

Can you think of any early examples of globalization?

Alexander the Great 356 BC – 323 BC The globalization of Greek culture came with the conqueror Alexander the Great. In fact, there are cities named for Alexander in Iraq (Iskandariya), Egypt (Alexandria), and Turkey (Alexandria Troas). 356 BC – 323 BC

The Silk Road 114 BC - 1450s AD The Silk Road, a trade route between China and the Mediterranean Sea, promoted the exchange of ideas and knowledge, along with trade goods and foods such as silk, spices, porcelain, and other treasures from the East.

Age of Exploration When Europeans began establishing colonies overseas, globalization grew. Many early European explorers were eager to bring the Christian religion to the regions they visited. The globalization of Christianity spread from Europe to Latin America through Christian missionaries working with the local populations.

Industrial Revolution Globalization was accelerated in the nineteenth century with the Industrial Revolution, as mechanical mills and factories became more common. Many companies used raw materials from distant lands. They also sold their goods in other countries.

History of Globalization Before 1500, contact between people around the globe was sporadic From 1500 to 1800, networks linked all the world’s religions and peoples From 1800 to the present people became more connected than at any other point in history

Basics of Globalization Go to our classroom account and open up the “Basics of Globalization” activity. Read through the sections and answer the summary question that follows. Turn in when you are done.
