Lesson 1 What is the Conservation of Energy? Chapter 16 Energy Lesson 1 What is the Conservation of Energy?

Energy Everywhere Energy and Matter are basic components of the Universe, and are closely related. There are seven forms of energy: Thermal Radiant Electrical Nuclear Sound Chemical Mechanical

Energy – the ability to do work Joule- a unit of measurement for energy and work

The Law of Conservation of Energy The amount of energy in a closed system always remains the same. Energy can change forms, but it cannot be created or destroyed.

When energy transforms from one type to another, thermal energy is always produced. No machine is 100% efficient. No machine could produce more energy than it uses.

Potential and Kinetic Energy Potential and Kinetic are two ways of classifying energies. Potential energy- is stored energy. Kinetic energy- is energy of motion. Energy is constantly changing from potential to kinetic and back again.

Can you describe the energy transformations taking place in the following situation? Your pencil falls off your desk. You bend down to pick it up, and place it back on your desk.

Nuclear Energy Nuclear energy is the energy that holds an atomic nucleus together. It is released when the nuclei of one atom is changed into the nuclei of another atom. It is the most powerful type of energy!

2 Types of Nuclear Energy Fusion- a nuclear reaction in which small nuclei join together to form new nuclei Fission- a nuclear reaction in which the nuclei of an atom is split and releases energy
