EXCRETORY SYSTEM Chapter 48 section 3 PP 993-998
Excretory System Every cell in the body produces metabolic waste. Skin, lungs, and kidneys make up this system.
Function SKIN LUNGS Excretes water, salts, small amounts of nitrogenous wastes Excretes water vapor and CO2
Function: Urinary System Formation and excretion of urine Urine is mostly water, keeps wastes dissolved and easier to excrete Involves Kidneys and Bladder
Steps: Filtration Blood forced into kidneys Urea, wastes, and various substances are removed
Steps: ReAbsorption Some substances are return to blood; maintain balance Ex. Salts
Steps: Elimination Waste (urine) is stored in bladder until it is secreted through the urethra
Urine Waste removed from the blood by the kidneys Contains urea, water, salt Very light yellow color
What Urine Tells Us Kidney Damage - Proteins may leak into the urine Dark Yellow color - dehydration Brown color - bleeding from the kidneys High Glucose - the individual is diabetic Low or no glucose - hypoglycemia, which results from too much insulin
