What was Apartheid? System of government from 1948 to @1990. Afrikaans word meaning separation/separateness white minority ruled black majority did not have many rights. Origins in European colonialism and imperialism in Africa

Population Registration Act Grouped every South African into a particular race. - White - Black - Coloured - Indian/Asian

Separate Representation of Voters Act - strips voting rights from non-whites
