Understand velocity time graphs. 03/01/2019 WALT: Understand velocity time graphs.

Interpreting speed-time graphs Move the points to change the graph and ask pupils to interpret it. For example, ask pupils to calculate the acceleration and distance travelled over various stages in the journey. Ask pupils to find the total distance travelled by finding the area under the graph. Ask pupils to make up a story for a given graph.

Diagonally Up Constant Acceleration Horizontal Constant speed Diagonally Down Constant Deceleration Gradient This is the acceleration of the object. Area under the graph This is the distance travelled by the object. Velocity time

Time s Velocity m/s Accelerate for 4 seconds, then constant speed of 2 m/s for 2 seconds then accelerating for 4 seconds Distance = Tri + rect + tri = 4 + 12 + 16 = 32 m accel = 8 4 = 2 m/s2 8 accel = 2 4 = 0.5 m/s2 4 2 4

Time s Velocity m/s Decelerate for 2 seconds, then constant speed of 6 m/s for 2 seconds then decelerating for 6 seconds 2 decel = 4 2 = 2 m/s2 4 6 decel = 6 6 = 1 m/s2 Distance = Tri + rect + tri = 4 + 24 + 18 = 46 m 6
