Progress Monitoring of English Learners Cindy Barnes Delaware County Intermediate Unit ELL Supervisor cbarnes@dciu.org

Objectives Determine the importance and need of progress monitoring English Learners. Identify the strengths and limitations of progress monitoring tools for English Learners. Discuss a plan for action for progress monitoring English Learners.

Turn & Talk How do you monitor English Learners’ progress throughout the school year? What tools do you use? What data does it provide? How do you report the data?

Purposes of Progress Monitoring ELs Gain insight into students’ growth Target areas of need Highlight areas of strength Provide valuable information to classroom teachers Data for language difference vs. disability Other? Turn & Talk: How has data from progress monitoring helped you make informed decisions in the classroom?

Sample Progress Monitoring Tools In groups, evaluate the progress monitoring tools at your tables. Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the tool. Identify how you can use the data measured to make informed-decisions in working with your English Learners. Record your responses on the chart paper.
