American Frontier and Folklore Art The artwork of John Quidor and George Bingham

Frontier Style Art Frontier Art focuses on the westward expansion taking place in the 1840’s with the acquisition of new territory from the Mexican War and the Louisiana Purchase. Frontier Art falls under the Nature theme of Art because it emphasizes the relationship between the frontier (nature) and the people moving westward. Frontier art could also illustrate the Here and Now theme of art as it demonstrates the lives of the frontiersmen moving west at the time this style was popular.

George Bingham Born March 20th 1811 in Virginia and died July 7th 1879. In 1845 Bingham began a series of frontier lifestyle paintings one of the most famous being “Fur Traders Traveling Down the Missouri River” which sparked his career as a frontier style artist. Bingham also received further education in art when studied at the Dusseldorf School in Germany. One of Bingham's also famous paintings is “David Boone Escorting Settlers through the Cumberland Gap” which accents the Here and Now theme of art when people moved west.

Folklore Style Art Folklore art was commonly used to tell popular stories which included fairy tales, bible stories, and horror stories. Folklore art falls into the story telling purpose of art because Folklore paintings often depicted stories that pertained to their culture and had moral lessons.

John Quidor Born January 26th 1801 in New Jersey and died December 13th 1881 Quidor was forced to support himself by painting stage coaches and fire engines until he died impoverished in 1881. Many of his paintings did not earn him credit until after his death. Quidor painted several pictures based on the stories of Washington Irving who was a close friend of Quidor’s. Some of Quidor’s famous works are: “The Devil and Tom Walker” and “Ichabod Crane Pursued by the Headless Horseman”.
