THE EMPLOYEE’s PROVIDENT FUND ACT-1952 INTRODUCTION THE EMPLOYEE’s PROVIDENT FUND ACT-1952 This act is to provide a kind of Social Security to the employees. The Act mainly provides retirement or old age benefits, such as Provident Fund, Superannuation Pension, Invalidation Pension, Family  Pension and Deposit Linked Insurance. Employees who have been appointed on Basic salary of Rs 15000 or less are covered under the provision of the EPF Act. ( as per the Revised notification from Ministry of Labor) For more than Rs 15000 (Basic Salary) it’s on the discretion of Employee and Employer to come under EPF act but not mandatory, when it’s the first job of the employee. But Its Mandatory for Employees to contribute towards PF , if employee was earlier contributing towards PF in Last Organizations. Percentage of contribution to be deducted from employees part is 12% of Basic Salary. Employer Contribution is 12% of Basic Salary and addition to this 1.61% of Basic Salary is also paid as Admin Charges. So in total 13.61% is Employer Contribution towards EPF.

CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS PF EMPLOYEE`S CONTRIBUTION MONTHLY PF 12 % of the BASIC (To be deducted from the GROSS salary)   EMPLOYER`S CONTRIBUTION PF -Admin Charges 1.61% of BASIC (To be part of the CTC) TOTAL 13.61% of BASIC

BENEFITS Employee Provident Fund is a very important tool of retirement planning. The tax free interest (compounding) and the maturity ensures a good growth of your money. If continued for a very long term, it can help immensely in meeting ones retirement goal. But while fulfilling other goals or during emergencies, we fall short of funds even after taking all recourse and do force borrowing. At this moment EPF can be helpful due to certain benefits it provides.
