Understanding Drug Use Learning Goals I am learning to understand the range of side effects associated with using Cannabis I am learning how to apply critical thinking skills associated with caring for myself and others. I am learning safety practices for responding to dangerous situations involving illicit drug use.

Definition of Drug A drug is any substance that when taken into the body, changes the way you think, act or feel. This definition includes legal drugs such as medicines, alcohol (legal age 19) and tobacco (legal age 19) illegal drugs such as cannabis.

Short Term Effects of Using Canabis Cannabis impairs the nervous system- affects vision, impairs judgment and reduces reaction time. Affect the the respiratory system. Delivers more tar to the lungs than cigarettes do. Difficulty concentrating and learning new facts Side affects are more serious for young people. Brain and body is still developing.

Long term Effects of Cannabis THC is very addictive THC accumulates in the fatty tissues of the vital organs eg. Brain, heart, lungs A person may experience Hallucinations Social environment may change.
