Topic of the Day - Abuse Why do you think people abuse one another? What are some of the things that people do to abuse one another? What are some of the ways that people can prevent abuse?

Definition of Abuse According to Merriam Webster’s Online Dictionary: A corrupt practice or custom Improper or excessive use or treatment Language that condemns or vilifies usually unjustly, intemperately, and angrily Physical maltreatment

Where does abuse come from? Mostly from a lack of self-esteem and learned behavior People say things to make themselves feel better People allow themselves to be abused because they don’t believe they deserve better Abuse starts small and usually gets increasingly damaging

Where does abuse come from? Mostly from a lack of self-esteem and learned behavior It’s damaging to the person being abused but also damaging to the person who is abusing Several steps for stopping abuse, but first one should identify it

Activity: Causes of Emotional Abuse Activity Sheet p. 8 (Working Alone) Look at the list and determine how you feel and what you would do or have done if this happened to you. Let’s discuss

Conclusions Low self-esteem can lead to abusive relationships because one tries to improve their own situation Identifying abuse in early stages and stopping it avoids escalated abuse

Conclusions Those in abusive relationships have often witnessed it before making it “acceptable” in their eyes There are different ways to solving conflict and avoiding negative actions with others and with ourselves
