Objectives To consider the different skills relating to enterprise that we need to be aware of.
Today As well as taking risks and setting out to set up a business, there are certain other skills that we need to consider when thinking about being enterprising: Thinking Ahead Making Connections Showing Initiative Making Decisions Showing Leadership All of these skills will be part of being enterprising and making decisions.
Thinking Ahead This is divided into two key areas: Knowing what people will want in the future. Anticipating problems OR opportunities.
Making Connections The idea here is very simple – one thing leads to another and so everything connects together. Mind mapping helps here as it will show how everything will come together.
Showing Initiative Basically – this means not waiting for orders or following suit – instead making the decision to act. By being first businesses have more of a chance to make an impact.
Making Decisions Entrepreneurs will need to find out as much information as possible, then use this to help them make a decision. A successful entrepreneur is someone who can make choices regardless of how difficult they are.
Showing Leadership To be successful in the world of business, there needs to be a clear sense of leadership. Leadership needs to be based on good judgement and inspiring their team to follow.
Leadership Approaches Outcome Alex Ferguson Tough, almost bullying; very decisive; brutally honest. Gains huge respect from staff. Richard Branson Full of initiative; friendly and sociable. Love and respect from staff, inspirational. David Cameron Decisive, persuasive; claims to listen but seems not to hear. Gets what he wants, but results can be divisive.
