Game Storage, Connectivity & PSU P2 Understand hardware technologies for game platforms Game Storage, Connectivity & PSU Game storage medium: proprietary; standard; flash memory; digital versatile disc (DVD); optical disc; universal media disc (UMD); magnetic tape; internal; speed; size; advantages and disadvantages; antipiracy Connectivity: stand alone; controller ports; local area network (LAN); wide area network (WAN); internet; broadband; wireless general packet radio service (GPRS); wireless application protocol (WAP); wifi; Bluetooth® Power supply: internal battery; external source

Game Storage What is game storage? Propriety and Standard What do these mean?

Proprietary Storage Format A proprietary storage format is a file format and/or physical media design of a games company that contains data that is ordered and stored according to a particular encoding-scheme. Designed by the company to be secret, such that the decoding and interpretation of this stored data is only easily accomplished with particular software or hardware that the company itself has developed. The specification of the data encoding format is not released or has non- disclosure agreements. Examples: UMD – Vita Blu-Ray – Xbox One & PS4 Nintendo Game Cartridges - 3DS What examples can you think of? Can PS4 Blu-Ray games be played on Xbox One?

Standard Storage Format Something that is open source by nature and doesn’t require any special knowledge or decoding to work. Examples: Hard Drives SD Cards Flash Drives Re-writable DVD’s/Blu-Rays

Storage Hardware & Media Blu-Ray – Single Layer(25GB) & Dual layer(50GB). Speed up to 72MB with 16x Drive. Hard Drive – Storage commercially available up to 16 Terabytes. Speed of 80-160 MB/s. SSD – Storage commercially available up to 2TB. Speeds up to around 712 MB/s

Game Storage - Understanding hardware technologies for game platforms Add to your hardware document: What is Game Storage? Proprietary, Standard. Types: Blu-ray, hard drive, SSD, Nintendo Cartridge. Discuss differences. Who uses which? Consoles, Pc’s etc. Why is a Propriety Storage Format good for antipiracy? Advantages and disadvantages throughout. Include references and examples as always

What is Connectivity within our games devices?

Different types of connectivity Stand alone Controller ports Local Area Network (LAN) Internet access including Wired(Ethernet port) and WIFI; Bluetooth®

Connectivity - Understanding hardware technologies for game platforms Add to your hardware document: What are the different types of connectivity and what are they used for. What connectivity does a PC, Xbox One, PS4 and a Nintendo 3DS have? Include references and examples as always

PSU - Understanding hardware technologies for game platforms A Power Supply Unit is an internal hardware component that supplies components in a computer games console or other hardware with power. Add to your hardware document: What a PSU is and it’s use. Whether the PC, Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo 3DS have an internal or external PSU. Include references and examples as always
