Order in diversity Access Biology

Why did we need to classify organisms in the first place? Around the world, scientists would discover different plants and animals but there was no way to communicate about them.

Biologists use this system to classify organisms by traits. Taxonomy Biologists use this system to classify organisms by traits.

Learn more about Taxonomy…

Binomial Nomenclature How we name species. 2 words in each name The first word in the name is the genus EX Ursas 2nd word in name describes a characteristic EX matrimus Ursas matrimus- Polar bear Ursas has 5 other species of bears. Matrimus means by the sea Binomial Nomenclature

You try… Write your first and last name. If your name were a scientific name, which part would be the genus? Which part would be the species identifier? Now write your name as a scientific name. You try…

Quick Check 1 2 3 What is a species? Define taxonomy. What is binomial nomenclature?

Over time, the system got bigger. 1. species 2. genus 3. family 4. order 5. class 6. phylum 7. kingdom 8. Domain

The higher one the chart, the bigger the category. Domain is the biggest group

What is the correct order?

Kingdom Animals Plants Protist Fungi Monera Very large, broad groups

Starts to look at physical similarities Phylum Starts to look at physical similarities

Click on image for interactive site Discussion Questions: What label used to group living things together based on common features? Describe how living things are grouped into phyla. Discuss the classification system. Click on image for interactive site

Class Further way to divide Phylum Starting to see more in common MAMMAL CLASS- drink milk as babies

Order- divided into families Organisms within a family have more in common than with organisms in any classification level above it A checklist is used to determine order. Order- divided into families

Families are different organisms, same species 522 fish families 136 mammal families 61 amphibian families 57 reptile families So much in common, they are related

Reptile Family

Cactus Family

Species and Genus In a scientific name: The first name is the genus, the 2nd name is the species Describes generic name There are currently 73,540 genus and 331,418 species Very specific, smallest group

Cavia Porcellus or a Guinea pig Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Mammalia Order: Rodentia Family: Caviidae Genus: Cavia Cavia Porcellus or a Guinea pig

Alces Alces- Moose Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Mammalia Order: Artiodactyla Family: Cervidae Genus: Alces

Kingdom Animalia Phylum Chordata Class Mammalia Order Cetacea How does the table indicate that a cat is more closely related to a bobcat than a ferret? Kingdom Animalia Phylum Chordata Class Mammalia Order Cetacea Carnivora Family Mysticeti Mustelidae Felidae Genus Balaenoptora Mustela Felids Felis Species B. physalus M. furo F. domesticus F. rufus Common Name Blue Whale Ferret Domestic cat Bobcat

Which two animals are most closely related? Explain. Kingdom Animalia Phylum Chordata Class Mammalia Order Cetacea Carnivora Family Mysticeti Mustelidae Felidae Genus Balaenoptora Mustela Felids Felis Species B. physalus M. furo F. domesticus F. rufus Common Name Blue Whale Ferret Domestic cat Bobcat
