2019 Wisconsin School Health Award Sally Jones, Ph.D. Health and Physical Education, and Coordinated School Health Consultant Student Services/Prevention and Wellness As DPI continues to develop initiatives to help schools support the mission and vision of ensuring every student graduates college and career ready, alignment between those initiatives and the Wisconsin School Health/ WSCC Award will be imperative going forward. We want the awards program to be in concert with meeting the big goals of reducing achievement gaps. This will result in incremental changes to the award process that will be executed in phases over time.

Cha, Cha, Cha, Changes Because collaboration is key to creating an equitable and healthy learning environment where every student is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged, this must involve all stakeholders. Efforts to improve school climate and reduce achievement gaps cannot merely rest on the shoulders of a few folks, it will take the Whole School, the Whole Community in order to serve the Whole Child. Hence, these efforts should be approached using a Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) lens. Starting this year, we will begin implementing Phase 1 of the award process.

Wisconsin School Health/WSCC Award New Application Process PHASE 1 New Name Wisconsin School Health/WSCC Award WSCC = Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child New Partnership Action for Health Kids New Application Process New Name With the emphasis on utilizing the WSCC approach to education, the Wi SHA will now be known as the Wisconsin School WSCC Award as a way to recognize, celebrate, and honor schools who promote programs that support the whole child. New Partnership Many changes have occurred at the national level. This resulted in the Alliance for Healthier Generation being unable to provide DPI the same level of support as they had done previously. Therefore, DPI has partnered with Action for Health Kids (AFHK) in an effort to continue the awards program The Alliance for Healthier Generation and Action for Healthy Kids are similar organizations. Both have created an abbreviated SHI assessment and the assessments are nearly identical. AFHK was able to provide DPI with the necessary support, as well as, support participating schools in advancing their health and wellness initiatives. Application Process Before, schools had to register by January 2nd and then apply by May 31st. This was confusing for many schools, and it was even confusing to me when I started this position. Schools had to summit an action plan and then the outcomes of said action plan. Many actions plans that were implemented could not be accomplished within the short time span, or consisted of unstainable initiatives. We know, that in order to see change/improvement/growth, this requires initiatives to be implemented in a manner that allows ample time to achieve them and be sustainable. Application Process Consists of 5 Steps If you don’t have a school team, create one and review district/school policy Team completes AfHK assessment Team completes DPI supplemental WSCC questions Team examines results, resources, other data Complete DPI application by March 31st Application Process During this first phase, schools will complete the AfHK abbreviated SHI assessment, the ## DPI supplemental questions, and the application by March 31st. A guide to the WI School WSSC Award, including links to the AFHK assessment, supplemental questions and the application has been created, and can be found on both the DPI health and physical education website. The online application will consist of general contact information and require a response to 2 prompts. For this first phase, these prompts will provide a bassline and will help set the school up for the next phase of the award.

Application Steps 1 & 2 Step 1 - Assessable a team Step 2 Review the district/school wellness policy Step 2 - Collectively complete the AfHK Assessment Select School Affiliation then choose your school Click on the SHI, select school and being the assessment Step 1 Team The team should carefully review the district and school wellness policy, and any other relevant policies Step 2 ***It’s important that the team collaboratively complete the both assessments - If you do not have an AFHK account, create one - Under “School Tools” scroll down to SHI Assessment or just click on the link - Once you have created a profile, You’ll enter the school zip then select the “School Affiliation” which will allow you to choose your school - After your school is chosen, to start the assessment, on the left side banner, click on the SHI tab (Many of the questions found in the AFHK assessment are nearly identical to the Alliance’s assessment). - When you finish the whole assessment and submit, a report will be generated. I would recommend printing your report. *** DO NOT SUBMIT until you are ready! Once you submit, no updates can be made until after April 15th. - Ryan Monroe is our state rep and will review your report and send a list of top 3 to 5 resources for the module(s) with the greatest opportunity to improve

Application Steps 3 & 4 Step 3 - Collectively complete Supplemental Questions Step 4 - As a team, analyze the results from the reports - Consider other school assessment data & reports Research resources Brainstorm next steps Step 3 DPI has created a Qualtrics Survey, which includes 8 additional SHI questions that broaden the focus on mental health, SEL, and staff/community/family engagement Just like the AFHK Assessment, the team collaboratively answers the questions The module titles will align with the AFHK assessment module titles A report will be generated once the survey is submitted and then sent to the contact person Take your module score from the supplemental questions and average them in the AFHK module score Step 4 Analyze results… notice the scores for each of the modules… look at your strengths and areas for improvements Utilize other school data (WellSat) to help inform strengths and improvement areas Review AFHK recommendation resources as well as research other possible resources Brainstorm next steps…look at the areas needing improvement
