A New Deal Fights the Depression #6 Chapter 15 The New Deal Section 1 Notes A New Deal Fights the Depression OBJECTIVE: Learn about Franklin D. Roosevelt’s programs to fight the Depression.

I. Americans Get a New Deal 1932: Democrats nominate NY Governor Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Roosevelt: reform-minded; project friendliness, confidence. Anti-Hoover Distant Cousins

Democrats win Presidency, Senate, and House. With “brain trust”, FDR spent 4 months to formulate policies to alleviate problems. No more “voluntary cooperation” FDR’s relief program--- The New Deal Goals Relief for the needy Economic recovery Financial reform

Significantly expanded the government’s role in nation’s economy. The Hundred Days March 9-June 16, 1933: FDR passed over 15 major new deal laws. Significantly expanded the government’s role in nation’s economy. Is FDR a Socialist??? FDR’s 1st step as President was to declare a bank holiday. Sought to revive confidence in banks.

Fireside Chats FDR gave fireside chats- radio talks, explaining the New Deal measures. First chat discusses need for public support of government and banks. Chats were successful because weeks later, many Americans returned their savings to banks.

II. Helping the American People FDR implements programs to help farmers and other workers. FDR also attempts to promote fair business practices. Lastly, FDR sought to improve the food, clothing, and sheltering of Americans.

III. The New Deal Comes Under Attack Deficit spending- spending more money than government takes in. Funds New Deal. Liberals say New Deal does not do enough to help poor, fix economy. Conservatives say New Deal used to control business, socialize economy.

Three Fiery Critics of the New Deal Father Charles Coughlin- wants guaranteed income, banks nationalized. Dr. Francis Townsend- devises pension plan for elderly. Senator Huey Long (La.) proposes his own social program called Share-Our Wealth. Very popular program until Long was assassinated.

Ch.15.2 Notes The Second New Deal Takes Hold By 1935, economic recovery not as great as FDR had expected. FDR launches second phase: more relief for farmers, workers. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, a social reformer, encourages FDR to further the New Deal.
