EPISODE 1 Lessons Learned + Best Practices Watch Episode 1 here: http://www.idin.org/idds/organize-host/design-facilitator-trainings Community members and leaders as participants Involvement of local government and universities Repeated, extended community visits Hosting summits in communities Host a CCB or hands on workshop 3-6 months before hands

Community Partners + Projects EPISODE 5 Community Partners + Projects Watch Episode 5 here: http://www.idin.org/idds/organize-host/design-facilitator-trainings Before IDDS Meet with the community Run a hands-on workshop Generate list of potential projects with the community Scope projects for to fit your summit Send projects out to participants before IDDS to form teams and to DFs to do research on projects At IDDS Review projects and teams at IDDS Pivoting is ok! After IDDS Complete project reports for sustainability Projects move forward with teams and community (some don’t and that’s ok too!)

Who is “the community”? There are several different models out there… Who exactly is “the community” for you?

How do you want the community to change after IDDS?

How do you want the community to change after IDDS? How does the community want to change after IDDS?

Selecting Community Participants Select community members who are interested in championing that change and consider them as participants for IDDS> Use the same criteria and questions as the others Talk with them – be clear about dates and needing to stay for whole summit Try to get actual users and movers Try to run a CCB workshop or a skill builder, if you haven’t yet Add to your participant lists now Two different models pictured above: IDDS Zero Waste gave the criteria and number of spots to their waste partners and had them select the participants. IDDS D’Kar organizers held a CCB and then walked around the community themselves with the criteria and oral questions to select the participants. (side note - great video about Jacob, IDDS D’Kar participant from D’Kar, here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANcUN_zjsQw&list=PLpzi3NcHwFtj_K0v8hR34PxkI6rH4UDln)

Prepare Organizers Make sure your organizers are prepared, know what they’re doing and where they are going, and feel ready and comfortable enough to lead  We’ll go over this a bit at Organizer Orientation, but good to start talking about it with your organizing team now if you haven’t already.

What is the goal of each visit? How long do we have? What projects and where? Community Leaders / Who you’ll be working with? Languages? Cultural expectations? (greetings, gifts, etc.) Taking pictures Check-list of what they need to bring with them Meal money? Prepare Organizers Languages? Cultural expectations? (greetings, gifts, etc.) Maps? What projects and where? Community Leaders / Who you’ll be working with? Check-list of what they need to bring with them Meal money? What is the goal of each visit?

Participants will be asking the same questions  Prepare them well. Prepare Participants

Prepare the Community Let them know who is coming and when? Languages? How long will they stay? What are their goals? What do they need to prepare and do? Should they expect compensation? What should they expect? How do they feel about photos? Languages? Cultural expectations? (greetings, gifts, etc.) Maps? What projects and where? Community Leaders / Who you’ll be working with? Make sure you give organizers and participants a map of the place including the important spots such as health clinic, important offices or locations, innovation centers, workshops, shops, etc. You can also make it a fun design activity if you want. Participants can draw on it things they notice. You can also do a community mapping activity if you want. Have community members start with a blank paper and draw out a map of their community individually and then share with each other. You’ll see what spots are most important to different people by what they remember to mark on there. It’s a good way of information gathering and fun activity  Community Mapping
