What is Anxiety? The condition of feeling uneasy or worried about what may happen or things that you cannot control; an unpleasant state of inner turmoil Can be CONSTANT Severe anxiety may lead to a panic attack Symptoms Feelings of fear or dread Constant worry or uneasiness Mind may race with worry Perspiration, trembling, restlessness or muscle tension Rapid heart rate, lightheadedness or shortness of breath Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)= medical condition, diagnosed Someone you know with anxiety: Amanda Seyfriend

What is anxiety?

What is depression? Prolonged feeling of helplessness, hopelessness and sadness We ALL are sad some of the time; depression is different Clinical Depression= medical condition, diagnosed Many times has no cause or trigger. Depression is NOT something you can just “snap out of”--- this is a very uneducated and ignorant statement. Would you tell someone to just snap out of cancer?? It’s the SAME thing. Physical or Mental Illness, it’s still an ILLNESS Someone you know with depression: actor Robin Williams

What is depression? Symptoms Persistent sad mood, feelings of emptiness or pointlessness Loss of energy, not enjoying things you used to enjoy Difficulty sleeping or oversleeping, feelings of worthlessness Can you tell someone is depressed just by looking at them? (masking)

Getting Help Talk with supportive people (GOOD friends, family, teachers) Get physical activity- walking/running, sports, dancing, etc. Volunteer- focus on other people’s needs and happiness, and you will feel a sense of happiness yourself Seek professional help- counselors, therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists Mrs. Goldberg is a great resource here at IWA!
