Observational Learning also known as vicarious learning, modeling, or social learning
The Modeling Process Attention -- the individual notices something in the environment. Retention -- the individual remembers what was noticed. Reproduction -- the individual produces an action that is a copy of what was noticed. Motivation -- the environment delivers a consequence that changes the probability the behavior will be emitted again (reinforcement and punishment)
People can learn through observation. Mental states are important to learning. Learning does not necessarily lead to a change in behavior.
basic models of observational learning: A live model, which involves an actual individual demonstrating or acting out a behavior. A verbal instructional model, which involves descriptions and explanations of a behavior. A symbolic model, which involves real or fictional characters displaying behaviors in books, films, television programs, or online media.
The choice to continue exhibiting the behavior depends on the outcome (positive or negative, reward etc). The only things that limit this type of learning are the intelligence level and the level of ability to copy the person well that the learner possesses.
Example: In a famous experiment, social psychologist Al Bandura showed young children a video of a woman hitting and kicking an inflatable “Bobo” doll. When left alone with a similar doll, children copied the woman’s aggressive gestures.
