The Oceania Project Presentation by Jazmin Kement

ABOUT THE OCEANIA PROJECT This project was established in 1988 A non-profit research and information organisation devoted to the conservation and protection of Whales, Dolphins and the Oceans This work has become successful due to the devoted lovers of the ocean, and continues to become possible, by individuals who participate in “The Oceania Project’s Internship Program” This program is open to anyone who is interested in wanting to get involved - there is no experience required. Just a passion for whales and dolphins is all that you need!

WHO ARE THEY? Founders of this organisation are: Trish and Wally Franklin Trish is studying the social and ecological importance of whales in Hervey Bay Wally is studying the abundance, the residency and migration location of humpback whales in Hervey Bay As they venture out in the ocean together, they are aiming to complete their PhD as candidates of the Southern Cross University Whale Research Centre Group (SCUWRCG)

WHAT DO THEY DO? The Oceania Project is a research study program that collects data for Humpback whales and identifies trends in their: Behaviour Social dynamics and Social Organisation Research is conducted through a photo-identification program and then later analysed and observed This significant research has made a difference to the almost near extinction due to commercial whaling that was occurring in Antarctica

DEMONSTRATION OF THEIR WORK RIGHT: Here are some images of Trish and her team, analysing the data collected from the day’s sample of photo identification on Humpback whales ABOVE: Wally aboard the Moon Dancer in 2001 as they are out on sea conducting research
