Our infrastructures and cities are built on flying carpets

Key challenges for smart / sustainable / resilient cities and infrastructures dependent of subsurface knowledge Geo-Hazards : ground stability, subsidence, earthquake, flooding Resources / services : water, geothermal energy, energy storage, building materials Remediation of polluted soils, urban wastelands … In the context of climate change and energy transition and of increasing conflict of usage of the underground We need an holistic modelling of cities that integrates the subsurface (and the other components of the natural environment as air, water, biodiversity) “City system” (analogy of “earth system”) Geological surveys, environmental agencies are information providers and data custodians

Why is it difficult to merge modelling of built environment and “geology” ? Modelling process Complete design by human Progressive exploration, and understanding (increasing complexity) Data acquisition Relatively cheap (Lidar…) Expensive and ”indirect” Modelling tools CAD engineering software “geomodellers” (interpolation algorithms) Standards BIM CityGML For 2d : GeoSciML For 3D ??? Accuracy / uncertainty Usualy well known (design – construction) Difficult to estimate, communicate, and represent Visualisation VR tools for general public “for experts only” People Engineers Natural scientists

Do we (GSOs) want to be part of the game ?

Some considerations about Geological Surveys strategies We are not mapping agencies (even 2D/3D), rather information agencies « We must not work anymore in a bubble » (Linda Richard – OneGeology meeting) For new customers / users (not only for geologists…) We will deliver new “3D products” : regularly updated, with provenance and traceability, be delivered on demand, easily integrated in different environments or workflows (including machine to machine) Ensuring a better collaboration with academic research on one side and industry on the other side Move from “handcraft” products to more industrialised processes we need to improve our internal processes and better collaborate with partners and customers this is all about interoperability (NATO defines interoperability “as the ability to operate in synergy”) … no interoperability without standards

… so what do we expect from standards ? To exchange between our “pairs” This is what we have done in CGI (GeoSciML, ERML,…) Necessary Takes time Must focus on use cases ( “Lite” versions) To exchange information with other communities (ie BIM for infrastructures) To facilitate the internal processes, (ie production and update of 3D models using a standardized description of geological conceptual framework) To facilitate the reuse of our data in broader contexts (ie AI…) … always need to identify why and with whom be interoperable… … and must be implemented…
