Art Terminology
Style: A personal way of working, or the work of a group having similar visual aspects, messages or cultural period. Medium: Material that an artist uses to make an artwork (ex. Paint, graphite, collage, mixed-media)
Stylization: Representation of natural forms depicting artistic ideas of a particular culture or art period. STYLIZED IMAGES: depicts simplified or exaggerated visual forms that emphasize a particular “look” based on decorative design or an individual artist’s style
Symbolism: is used extensively as a visual representation of religious beliefs or beings. SYMBOL: a form, image, sign or subject representing a meaning other than its outward appearance. A butterfly emerging from a cocoon is a Christian symbol for the Resurrection and eternal life.
The colour wheel Primary Colours: RED, BLUE, YELLOW Cannot be mixed. Secondary Colours: GREEN, ORANGE, VIOLET Mixed using primary colours. SECONDARY SECONDARY SECONDARY SECONDARY PRIMARY Tertiary Colours: BLUE-GREEN, YELLOW-GREEN etc. Mixed using a primary and a secondary colour. PRIMARY SECONDARY PRIMARY SECONDARY
The colour wheel COMPLEMENTARY COLOURS: Directly opposite on colour wheel. When used together they enhance each other. Yellow and violet Red and green Blue and orange ANALOGOUS COLOURS: Next to each other on the colour Wheel. When used together create unity.
