Data Analysis Training for The SPSA Writing Process Local District Northeast Title 1 Coordinator Meeting 10-27-16 Tony Karch

Learning Objective Learners will have a better understanding of the Data Analysis Process and how it relates to the Single Plan for Student Achievement.

Purpose of the Single Plan for Student Achievement Is to create a cycle of continuous improvement of student performance Is to raise the academic performance of all students to state standards How do you do that? With the continued use of DATA

Continuous Improvement Process

Data Use Essentials Develop a Leadership Team Collect Data Analyze Patterns Generate Hypothesis Develop Goal-Setting Guidelines Design Specific Strategies Define Evaluation Criteria Make the Commitment Learning Point Associates, 2004 “A Guide to Using Data in School Improvement Efforts”

Why Develop a Leadership Team? Collecting data from a variety of sources is hard work Discussions are richer and more diverse with numerous points of views and insights Disseminating the information is easier Sustaining the continuous school improvement cycle is easier when the work is divided Learning Point Associates, 2004 “A Guide to Using Data in School Improvement Efforts”

Collect Multiple Types of Data Achievement Data Demographic Data Program Data Perception Data Learning Point Associates, 2004 “A Guide to Using Data in School Improvement Efforts”

Guiding Questions for Data Collection Who are our students? What trends do we see in our demographics? What evidence can we collect about our students’ learning? What evidence shows which students are meeting or not meeting standards? How successful are our programs? How do members of our school community feel about our school? Learning Point Associates, 2004 “A Guide to Using Data in School Improvement Efforts”

Where do we find this information in LAUSD?

Analyze Data Patterns Analyze achievement, demographic, program, and perception data through their own lenses Then compare everything to the achievement data Look for patterns and relationships among the data Summarize observed strengths Summarize and rank observed problems Step back and look at the big picture What are the patterns that have emerged? Learning Point Associates, 2004 “A Guide to Using Data in School Improvement Efforts”

What are the trends or patterns at your school? Discuss with your elbow partner some of the data trends you are seeing at your school. Consider: achievement data, demographic data, perception data, and program data Share out

Generate Hypotheses Ask? Why are our children performing the way they are? What in our systems and practices is causing our children to have these problems? Record the team’s hypothesis and then either “Reject” or “Accept” each one Learning Point Associates, 2004 “A Guide to Using Data in School Improvement Efforts”

CAUTION: Don’t play the blame game!

Sample Hypothesis Learning Point Associates, 2004 “A Guide to Using Data in School Improvement Efforts”

Developing Goal-Setting Guidelines Discuss the outcomes for your students five years from now Project one year toward the goal Consider staff capacity and barriers for staff and students What data will you collect to measure success and progress? Create a SMART Goal

SMART Goals are: Specific Measureable Achievable Research Based Time Sensitive Learning Point Associates, 2004 “A Guide to Using Data in School Improvement Efforts”

Design Specific Strategies Brainstorm specific actions to achieve your goal Use your hypotheses for possible directions Design several strategies Guiding questions: Is the strategy… Clear and understandable to all readers? Based on best practice? Observable and measureable? Learning Point Associates, 2004 “A Guide to Using Data in School Improvement Efforts”

Final Steps: Define Evaluation Criteria How will we know if our strategies are successful? What evidence or DATA will we have to show the success of our action? Make the Commitment Share the plan with staff and SSC Monitor the implementation monthly Do what you say, say what you do!
