Parent Meeting Topic: Math Math games to play with your child at home!

Meeting Agenda Math in Pre- K Why are these games important? How to play math games (overview) Parent child activity Parent and child rotate through each center. 1.graphing m&ms 2.dice roll board game 3. card games 4. tapping patterns Other important info Coat, hat, gloves, boots, snow pants Sign-in sheet

Patterns in Pre-K Patterns learning about patterns helps a child with counting strategies, problem solving, and algebraic thinking.  Posing open-ended, pattern-related questions helps expand children’s thinking and makes concept connections. (ex. What would happen to the pattern if I changed ______?) One of the lesser known aspects of patterns is the fact that they often form the basis of music.

Card Games Card Games  Card Games- engage the students, provide opportunities to expand number sense, practice facts, and develop visualization skills. Card games teach students to play both cooperatively and competitively, and require them to use critical thinking skills to win. Card games are a great opportunity for students to share what they are learning at school since many households have a deck of cards.

Graphing in Pre-K Graphing Children should have many opportunities to gather, represent, and interpret their own data. Graphs help students to be confident and competent mathematical thinkers. Teachers can enhance children’s interest in mathematics by creating graphs about familiar routines and classroom events. When discussing results of a graph be sure to start with an open ended question about the graph, such as, “What do you notice about our graph?

Subitizing Subitizing is the ability to recognize a number of items without actually counting. This is a fundamental skill for students to help them understand the concept of number."   Students who can subitize, can easily learn the properties of number, (such as unitizing, counting on, and composing and decomposing numbers, and place value.) Being able to Subitize will help your child with math throughout their entire education.

Directions for Games Table 1- dice roll board game-roll dice move game piece that many spaces. First one to the end wins. Table 2 M&M Graph- parents and students work together to sort the m&ms by color than use the candy pieces to graph how many of each color you received. Table 3 Top it- parents and students will play a game where each flip a card over, then whoever has the higher number keeps the cards.

Directions for games cont. On the Carpet: Patterns with rhythm sticks- Parents and children will roll up two pieces of paper and tape them to make sticks. Parents and students will take turns creating and copying patterns by tapping with the sticks.

Other topics Please remember to dress your child appropriately for the weather. Please remember to sign in and out on the correct space. –Mrs. Omar
